What adjustments would you consider making to your car to try to save fuel and reduce carbon emissions?

The #1 adjustment anyone can make to a car to reduce fossil fuel use is to have it transport vegetables only from the supermarket and no meat or dairy, both of which are responsible for 51% of all greenhouse gases, according to the WorldWatch Institute.

Apart from this one very significant adjustment, you can keep tires inflated, make sure a car is washed and waxed, accelerate and decelerate slowly, use cruise control on the highway, and drive at or under the speed limit, all of which will reduce fuel use.

  1. Anything really, as long as it didn’t cost too much more and was ok for my car. I try to buy the greener petrol but who knows if it really does help the environment. I’ve looked into those pruis cars but I can’t afford it right now but it’s definitely something I’ll look at for my next car. If there are greener tyres then I’ll totally go for it.

  2. I would increase horse powers of my car and increase carbon emissions of it as well. So it would get even less MPG and more CO2 out. Which I will do anyway pretty soon, by buying car with bigger engine and bigger tailpipe.
I will also probably let it run while staying idle on the parking lot, as much as possible.
After all the trees badly need CO2. Lets keep our planet green!

  3. Not much. I never could stand to commute in traffic so I rode a bus and napped for most of my career. Now I work at home. 20 years ago I calculated that I could save $4,000 per year by taking the bus - that would be about $8,000 per year now - and I haven’t driven to work since then. Small adjustments to a car won’t make as much difference as big differences in the way we travel.

Well, you can run it on bio-diesel if it is a diesel car, you can run it on natural gas, or biogas if it is a petrol car, and if you have the time, you can convert it to an electric car. Or you can get a horse and a carriage, best mode of transportation :)

  8. Keep your tires inflated to the proper pressure
Keep your air and oil filters clean.
    Drive slower
Flat hub caps without all the holes in them will help a little to reduce drag
    Get and use cruise control.
Empty out all unnecessary junk in your vehicle instead of hauling all that weight around.
Make sure the spark plugs are gapped correctly and changed when needed.
Take off that stupid spoiler- it pushes air up (upsets the designed air flow) in order to force the back wheels down (like adding extra weight to a vehicle which we already said wasn’t good) for added friction and drag.

So, to answer your question, I would be willing to do any adjustment to my car that will make it more efficient.

I gave it up anyway for a full underground railway & terrestrial bus card which is costing me for a whole month less (1/2) than I use to spend for my car fuel in a week :))))
Now I have plenty of time to read a book, less stress with the traffic, more money :)

  17. I have already converted my 1985 Toyota hilux to run on chip oil. It was a simple thing. I just added a bit of extra tubing to my fuel line and directed it past the manifold so the fuel is warmed up before being combusted and I mix filtered chip oil with diesel at a ratio of 8:1 and it runs fine. The local fish and chip shop loves it because they don’t have to pay to have someone take away their waste oil, I save a packet on fuel, and I am recycling a waste product and so saving on CO2 emissions by default.

The engine should be in good condition; if it is not running well you will waste fuel. Your tires should be well inflated; flat tires will waste fuel. Don’t use a roof-rack if you can avoid it; it destroys the aerodynamic shape of your car. Towing a small trailer is probably preferable to a roof rack if you can’t fit everything in the car.

The way you drive is just as important as your car. Avoid heavy and unnecessary acceleration, avoid unnecessary braking, drive as slowly as you can without excessively inconveniencing other drivers. Try to drive at a steady speed.

  25. Convert it to Hydrogen or Alcohol, you can buy or build a hydrogen generator, and cut down or eliminate the gasoline all together.
The way a hydrogen generator works, you put thin stainless steel plates about 1/16 inch up to 1/8 inch apart, put thin strips of Plexiglas
between each set of plates on the ends so the plates do not touch and short out, the more plates you use the more Oxygen and hydrogen you get, hook the first plate up to positive on your battery the next plate to the negative on the battery, and each other plate is hooked up the same way.
Then you fill the case up with tap water, then turn on the DC 12 votes, You will start seeing bubbles, these bubbled contain two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen, you should know that when two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen meats a flame or spark there is ans explosion. depending on how much you produce, the larger the amount the bigger the explosion.

If you try this be careful, start out small and then add to the plates until you are getting enough hydrogen to run your car, or just ge better mileage..

  33. I’d begin making certain the tires were inflated to 35lbs., balanced, and aligned properly. Then I’d empty the care of all items other than people and the parts shipped with the car (e.g spares, jacks, tire tools, etc.). I’d make sure the car had a fresh lube job and service for both oil and transmission, using 100% synthetic motor oil. I’d make sure the engine was in-tune and that the air filter was clean. And then I would inspect the belts for wear, replace any that needed it, and I would be certain to lube any idler bearings or pulley bearings for power steering, AC, power breaks, etc. along the belts to make sure no energy was wasted there either. In short, I’d do a full lube, service, and tune-up, then top off the tires. And then I’d wash and wax the car to reduce wind drag as much as is possible.

Then I’d strongly consider having a vacuum Gauge installed which shows you the amount of fuel you are using as you accelerate, your current mpg, etc. If there wasn’t a tachometer to show the engine rpms, I’d install one. Using the 2, I can adjust my driving to use less gasoline by knowing how to accelerate efficiently and when to up-shift
to reduce engine rpms, or even when to shift to neutral on downgrades
    or approaching stops.

For instance, using the tachometer and vacuum gauge on my wife’s car to avoid hard acceleration, plus arranging to coast up to traffic lights, timing them to turn green before I arrive, and coasting up to stop signs, I save more gas than any rational modification to our car could save. Our Honda is rated 23 city/ 27 hwy. She averages 22-23 because she never looks at either the vacuum gauge or the tachometer and she never times lights, brakes hard and accelerates harder. But I routinely achieve 32-34 mpg in the same car driving the same courses, and we never arrive more than a minute or so differently

The most fuel saving modification available for our car is to switch the
drivers. :) Of course, maintaining it well, and having a tach and vacuum gauge helps tremendously, and it really doesn’t take much practice to learn to time traffic lights or to coast up to stops. And my brake shoes last at least 3 times as long as hers, too for the same reasons. There’s money and carbon to be saved in reducing the wear on parts, as well, and using synthetic oil allows you 3 times the distance per change while greatly reducing engine parts’ wear as well.
And that also greatly reduces the carbon footprint otherwise required to create replacement parts or a replacement vehicle.
