IN THE 70'S THERE WAS A REPORT (IN 'POPULAR MECHANICS') OF SEVERAL FULL-SIZE VEHICLES WHICH UTILIZED VERY SMALL ENGINES COUPLED TO UNIQUE TRANSMISSIONS WHICH PROPELLED THEIR VEHICLES AT NORMAL DRIVING SPEEDS, AND GETTING DOUBLE THE MILEAGE AND MORE.

IT WAS DEEMED INADEQUATE, DUE TO THE AMERICAN DRIVER'S HEAVY RIGHT FOOT, AND NEEDING TO BE FIRST AWAY FROM THE TRAFFIC LIGHT.

WHEN IT WILL COST $100 FOR A TANKFUL OF FUEL, THE AMERICAN DRIVER WILL RELUCTANTLY ABANDON THAT NEED FOR JACK-RABBIT STARTS.
References :
1. Take it to the polls. Exercise your right to vote.
2. Boycott companies that do not support alternative energy or high mileage research and support those who do.
3. Can you back up the statements you made? If so, share your knowledge with others.
The fuel crisis is all about money and greed. We Americans have not done enough to prevent it in the last century and it's not going away quickly.
References :
All it takes is rising gas prices. The HIGHER the gas prices can get, the more likely people will look for alternative fuel sources.

Europeans have accepted diesels into their lives, but the US government and regulations on smog have kept Diesels out of American's lives. Believe me if gasoline hits $10/gallon, we'll be looking at alternative fuels.
