ethanol is essentially an alcohol stripper, it reacts with carbon and deposits on EVERYTHING that it touches and dissolves it.

problem with it is, if you have an older car where you have been using non ethanol gas with a metal gas tank, all that crap and rust in your tank is being stripped off and ends up clogging the screen, pickup, pump, fuel filter, fuel lines and eventually the injectors or jets (depending on which fuel system your engine uses) and it can clean the combustion chamber sure, but where does all that crap go? all over your valves, into the exhaust system and clogs the catalytic converter and clogs the 02 sensor, this is why i REALLY hate ethanol gas but we have no choice nowadays.
References :
It is more oxygen rich than gasolene, so it burns more complete leaving less hydrocarbons in the exhaust.

It is the same reason why you can put more gas in a turbo charged/blown/nitrous injected engine. The more oxygen the more gas you can add, with out the more oxygen the car will run to rich and spit the excess out the exhaust.
References :
It works just like MTBE, but MTBE pollutes the water even in minute amounts. That alcohol does not have deadly enviromental effects. Plus ethanol helps raise the farmer's corn prices.

I live in IL that has been fighting over the use of ethanol for the high cost of gov. subsidies, cutting down on the supply of corn for food, and it lowers the car's mileage over pure gas. The fight has been going on for over ten years.

It has been proven that there's more pollution generated to create the ethanol than the decrease that's seen when used in the engines. Ethanol also has 30% less energy per unit burned than gasoline therefore it takes more of it to produce they same power in the engine resulting in a 30% decrease in gas mileage over regular gasoline. The savings are pure fabrication by the tree huggers of the world.
References :
Scientific studies and reports on ethanol usage.
