Airline Carbon Trading - Coming Soon?

Imagine trying to fly American Airlines from Frankfurt to Chicago and being delayed because AA needs to purchase some carbon “Allowances” from easyJet. Or, your British Airways flight from London to Beijing is canceled because construction of a solar energy provider in South Africa is delayed. Think this is far fetched? Try reality in four years!

If the EU has its way, the European Union Emission Trading Scheme (EU ETS) will incorporate aviation into the emission trading program by 2011, with all flights into the EU under the program by 2012.
This sounds like extortion using fear. Are the Europeans getting brainwashed?

Yup. Under the rubric of evironmental resposibility and carbon neutrality, everyone flying to Europe will eventually be funding the bloated and useless bureaucracy.

  2. It has already started. Qantas started a voluntary program in Sept.

Quoted from TheAge.com.au http://www.theage.com.au/news/Business/Qantas-passengers-up-77-in-August/2007/10/15/1192300642707.html about Qantas

"The group also launched a carbon offset program, backed by a pledge to offset the carbon emissions of every international and domestic Qantas, QantasLink and Jetstar flight on September 19 - the first day of the program’s operation.

"Under the new program, Qantas and Jetstar passengers can elect to offset their share of flight emissions by making a small contribution through qantas.com and jetstar.com," it said.

Instead of the flight being canceled, they’ll just make you pay for your share of carbon credits.
