Why do people with diesel cars insist on leaving the engine running if at all possible?
I have a mate who has a diesel people carrier and leaves it ticking over outside his house even if he’s popping in for 10 minutes.
I’ve also had taxi drivers who I’ve asked to wait but have left them running for a good while even in the early hours.
Buses seem to do it to if they’re early and have to wait at a stop for 10 minutes.
Is there a mechanical or economical reason?
Just curious.
there is no mechanical or economical reason- they just think their diesels sound cool.

If it is turbocharged, it is a bad idea to shut down until the exhaust gas temp gets into the 300 f range. Oil will coke and damage the turbo over time. I have a turbo temp monitor that shuts it off when it gets to the right temp.
