Big trucks in the USA have almost always run on diesel, not unleaded. Quite a few smaller trucks (3/4 ton and 1-ton pickups) are also running on diesel fuel because of better fuel economy and longer life. Diesel cars have had a bad reputation for a long time here because of the noise and the smell, but with the VW Golf and Jetta TDI engines advertising 50 MPG, the diesel is catching on in a few circles.

Not popular at all.
As petrol is less than half the price of what it is here the gains in having a noisy smelly oil burner over the extra maintenance and purchase costs would need the driver to be doing in excess of 40000 ish a year to make economical sense.
If the duty and VAT were the same levels in the UK diesels would be as popular as a pork pie in a synagogue here as well

not popular for several reasons
1 cost more
2small choice
3 they smell
Diesel cast more,,,[yesterday in my town...regular unleaded 2.48 us per gallon....diesel was 2.68 per gallon
4 very few diesel pumps,,,,rural towns have more because of diesel pickup trucks [lots of them].other places you end up at truck stop with a hundred big 18 wheelers,

most popular is ford focus,,honda civic/accord,,toyota camary,,nissan altima sized cars
while hybrids are gaining a little most folks are happy with mileage in 20 town and 28/30 hyway
not buying super small cars yet mid sized best seller,,,and "crossover suv" are selling better than truck framed giants,,[toyota rav 4 type]

in america the cost of Diesel and petrol is same so as the pick up of petrol cars is best they use them

The big trucks most definitely run on Diesel, fyi.

Diesel cars are still rare in the US. VW, BMW, and Mercedes are the only manufacturers even selling diesel passenger cars in the US right now (I think the jeep Grand Cherokee has discontinued it’s diesel and Ford, Dodge, Chevy all sell diesel trucks, but that’s another story).

The VW TDIs are by far the most common diesel passenger cars in the US, but they are still few and far between. I absolutely love mine.

They peak periodically but currently, since diesel prices are higher than gasoline, people are shying away again. People are still figuring out if they want to go hybrid and if the price is worth it. I think they may catch on this time since they have more power and actually look like cars now instead of lab experiments.

Americans prefer gasoline cars. Diesel is not popular.
